National Mall, Washington D.C.
First night of the opening of Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian
September 21, 2004
The week of the opening of the museum was the largest gathering of Indian Nations in history.
Thousands of people gathered the first evening to watch and listen to indigenous artists perform on an outdoor stage near the museum.
As the sun was setting, many of us turned around and took pictures of this incredible sunset. That first day of the opening was truly an auspicious day.
